s&w model 648

S&w Model 648 - Recently when I joined all of our readers for Wheelgun Wednesdays, I was on a kick because I'm not always a big gun on the small print. This content run is going to continue this week as we take a look at one of Smith & Wesson's rare rimfire revolvers in the Model 648 .22 Magnum! With the full size of their staple 686 still chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR), this is a deceiving revolver in its appearance. We're going to see what performance, accuracy, utility, and fun this can bring to you. Let's dive in and move Wheelgun Wednesday!

As mentioned above, the Smith & Wesson Model 648 .22 Magnum revolver is a curious one because from a distance it looks almost identical to their Model 686 .357 Magnum Wheelgun. When you get closer and see the holes in the cylinder and barrel even alarm bells go off in your head, like "what's going on here?" All the specifications for the beautiful model 648 can be read below as presented by Smith & Wesson:

This rimfire revolver punches in an MSRP of $752 and is backed by Smith & Wesson's Lifetime Warranty in the rare event that you need a repair or factory repair on your wheel. An additional press release can be found on the Smith & Wesson website advising people to potentially add this gun to their collection:

The eight round all stainless steel Model 648 features a 6 inch full bottom barrel, Partridge front sight and adjustable rear sight, synthetic finger groove grips and DA/SA action. The Smith & Wesson Model 648 is suitable for hunting and hunting small game with the 22 WMR -Winchester Magnum rimfire cartridge.

When you crack the seal or open the box of Smith & Wesson's Model 648 .22 Magnum, you see the usual accessories that come with all of their revolvers. You have a simple cable lock for safe storage, your owner's manual, a set of 2 internal lock keys, and it all comes in the iconic blue plastic box. So what did I think when I first opened this revolver?...

For one, it has a similar profile, grip, and experience as their staple Model 686. Along with this, it is lighter and more or less easy to manipulate which leads to weight loss. . The Model 686 is, by comparison, less heavy, but the Model 648 is just as easy to kick the hammer with one hand, cock the cylinder with one hand, and cock the hand with one the hands of the two hands pull. almost. All in all, the slight weight and length make everything easy to manage.

Another point that immediately catches your eye is the infinity of Smith, and like all Smith & Wesson revolvers, because it looks like a mirror finish. It is definitely going to be difficult for manufacturers to duplicate it because you don't see anything like it in terms of curb appeal and the feeling it gives. In the photo above it was cloudy when I was tripping, you can see the reflection of the revolver's own cylinder on it's finish. very impressive!

I run winter and spring for wolf, coyote, and beaver work in Minnesota, and to keep order (and some live trees) at my local gun club. I find this gun to be a great companion for men and women in the outdoors who will need to carry a variety of equipment and hunters. It has enough length to give you the accuracy you need to hit your mark, but as discussed earlier, this gun is not too heavy to take on a day trip. To further address the question of fact, we continue to the range to see how it can be done on paper!

The bullets I shot while out on the range were some CCI TNT Green 30 grain lead-free hollow points. I have shot this ammo in the past in a variety of different rifles and platforms, and have always found it reliable. Ironically, on this particular day shooting CCI bullets I had 3 light-strike or rounds that would not explode. When I hit the second cylinder with my hand, every match was fired. This could be attributed to the bomb, the bullet itself, or the fact that it was a miserable, foggy 20°F day on the Minnesota tundra.

This gun has more stiffness than I expected, which adds to the fun of shooting it, but the model 648 still has that light, rimfire recoil we all love. I can also see a slight flare from the front of the barrel which makes me think I shoot this gun near dusk or dawn for best results.

One thing I'm pretty heads-or-tails with on almost all revolvers is the sight. Black on black metal sights are classic and true, but even with my young eyes, they are difficult to see and shoot correctly. I collect old double-action Smith & Wesson and Colt revolvers so I appreciate the accuracy of these types of sights, but admit they are not always easy to shoot. Fiber optic replacement is for people who want to upgrade like me, but the factory design will be the same.

One feature that I appreciate about its appearance and performance is the overall wheel profile. It is lean in frame for lower muzzle gain without adding weight. That's not to say that the .22 Magnum has a lot of recoil, but it always helps you stay on target and keep your sights better when your gun has a good weight.

In terms of accuracy, I tested the Model 648 with CCI bullets I said when shooting at 15 yards. I like to try revolvers the way I imagine myself using them in the field or in strategy. If I had taken this squirrel hunting or other varmint hunting, I would definitely call it unsupported or in an off-network. From the shooting range and distance, I get 2" groups or better.

I only test at 15 yards because that distance is too far for me to honestly go for any type of varmint hunting rifle. However, I am very impressed with the accuracy of the Smith & Wesson Model 648. If you get this revolver and play with its ammo selection, you will undoubtedly be even better than the team; Probably closer to 1″ or better. If I had a wider selection of ammo to play with, I would have been able to complete this out of hand because my last group had very little of the vertical band which is indicative of the powder. not compatible.

So after loving the Smith & Wesson Model 648 .22 Magnum and taking it somewhere for some rimfire fun, what do I do? Well, it is on par with many of the large-frame, centerfire revolvers produced by Smith & Wesson. The 6" barrel and long sight plane make it easy to be accurate. Full-lug barrel minimizes recoil for quick shots. The grip is comfortable and the stainless mirror finish is attractive.

The only things that are of minor concern are a few light nicks (which could be caused by inconsistent rimfire bullets or a cold MN period), and black-on-black holes see I've always been broken. It's just a matter of preference: do you want authentic, nostalgic old revolvers, or do you want modern, easy-to-see metal sights? No knocks for Smith & Wesson; Just a preference.

At an MSRP of $752 and many of the great features I've already mentioned, I believe this bomb is worth your money if you're in the market for a .22 Magnum wheelgun. It just depends on whether you want it with a barrel as long as the Smith & Wesson brand has nothing to worry about.

Finally, I want to say thank you to Smith & Wesson for giving TFB and me the opportunity to test their Smith & Wesson Model 648 .22 Magnum! I am very pleased.
