Guns are reactive tools. They are transferred to a person to respond to a threat. They can be kept at home ready to handle a threat at home. If we have a warning, then we are most often advised to deploy a rifle or shotgun.

So the pistol is the weapon of choice. Although handguns are not the most powerful firearms, they are the ones we are most likely to have on hand when a firearm is needed to save our lives. I spent several months evaluating the Judge Demi and formed a favorable opinion of the special use revolver.

The Judge is a 5-shot revolver that loads the .410 cartridge or the .45 Colt cartridge. This means true versatility. Likewise, the design limits the accuracy and range of the revolver. As a pure short-range home defender, Judge Demi has merit.
There are many arguments that getting on target quickly and striking very quickly - any strike - is critical. It is true. I've learned that it's better to slow down and center than make a quick mistake. That doesn't mean a quick shot isn't possible; it just takes practice.
The referee addresses this need by providing a charge. The .410 bore isn't powerful, but with the right load—and that's the key—it offers a solid protection option. Surprisingly, my evaluation shows that Bull Judge can also be viable for protection against close range predators. My test is probably the most common judge (there are more options), a steel-frame revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.
The revolver is relatively light, handles better than its clunky appearance suggests, and offers good hit probability for practitioners. The fit, finish and smoothness of the action are good. The revolver has a red fiber optic front sight. This scope provides a good aim and helps to acquire the target quickly.

A short barrel smoothbore pistol that fires a shotgun shell is illegal, the .410 and .45 Colt are close enough that Taurus could design and manufacture a revolver chambered for shotgun shells. 410 and .45 Colt cartridge. There's a rifle, but it's pretty shallow.
Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to use. Open the cylinder, load the chambers and pull the trigger to fire. There is no slide on the shelf and no fuses to use. The concept is to allow the shooter to get a quick shot hit. Although each individual round does not carry a lot of energy, the effect of the instantaneous impact charges of several projectiles offers excellent potential for injury.
You may have seen the ill-conceived videos and commercials where referee Demi is being shot at a target and the target is full of bullets. Birdshot is a small-scale projectile designed to humanely kill a bird with a few shots. It is not useful at all for personal protection. Like full-sized shotguns, the birdshot is good for training, but not for personal defense. A 7- to 9-shot magazine carries hundreds of small balls that form a pattern.
In the typical range of personal protection, this model ranges from 18 to 32 inches. That's 7 yards, over that shot it's useless. Worse, a small shot only penetrates a few centimeters. A criminal in a heavy winter jacket may not be injured at all. At about 15 feet, the Federal 4 load, carrying No. 3 shot, maintains a cohesive pattern of less than three inches. This is the preferred load for those using the .410 load for personal defense.

The Federal load is advertised at about 750 fps, but it's actually over 800 fps in the Judge. The total charge is 292 grains. Winchester offers a PDX load with a total load of over 300 grains, with three flat discs and a BB Shot load. With this load, the pattern is often quite large (up to 16 inches by 15 feet) with discs hitting the center of the target.
The Hornady .410 Defense load features a .41 caliber slug followed by two round balls. The slug generally tracks straight to the target with the balls radiating around the center. It is essential to model the shot on a paper target to determine how the shot will spread out to 5 to 10 yards.
In my opinion, 7 yards is the outer range for these loads, although the Hornady slug with its FTX design may be useful a little further. Finish, belly load, and specialty are useful for home defense and short-range defense against predators. Penetration tests on water barrels and wet newspapers show that these charges will cause serious injury.
Birdshot can penetrate a six-inch gallon container, and some shots will reach the second container, but very few. Federal's 2 ½-inch 4-ball OOO projectile penetrates 24 inches, which can be tied with 18 inches in gelatin. This is excellent.
Taurus Judge: A Powerful Revolver That Is Actually A Mini Shotgun
The Winchester PDX load shows a much larger pattern. However, all three units in the PDX offer a 3×4 pattern at 15 feet. The much larger model consists of 12 BBs. The Hornady FTX slug penetrates 15 inches from this revolver, with two rounds making a total group of 3 to 5 inches at 15 feet.
These heavy charges should deliver devastating results from 15 to maybe 21 feet, an average magical range of 7 meters. In fact, it is more likely to be in a room or bedroom. The referee has to aim, but the pattern is spread out enough to help a shot from 10 to 15 feet. This gun is useless after 21 feet with a shot.
Another option is to load the Judge with .45 Colt cartridges. In accordance with federal handgun and grenade law, the Judge is a .45 Colt revolver chambered for .410 cartridges. This is a rifle. The long jump of the .45 Colt bullet from the chamber to the muzzle seems to limit velocity and accuracy. In some cases this is true. However, my latest testing shows that this loss isn't always what we think it might be.
The Judge is tough enough to handle the heaviest loads, including hard SWC cast bullets. It depends on your back tolerance. A good choice for personal defense is Hornady Critical Defense. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. Velocity is 891 fps from a three-inch Taurus Judge barrel. The attraction is modest. This round hits the target point. At 15 yards, five shots from a strong bench position produced a 3-inch group. This is pretty accurate for personal protection.
Taurus Judge: A Gun That Fires .45 Colt And Shotgun Shells
Another option worth considering is the Winchester PDX 225-grain JHP. This load packs a punch at 780 fps. This lead weight offers plenty of momentum. The .45 Colt is one of the few pistols that performs well without expanding bullets. This has been proven in the Old West and in many engagements since then.
A solid choice is the Winchester 255 grain bullet. This bullet leaves the judge at 770 fps. (And 778 fps from a hand-held 4 ¾-inch revolver for comparison.) Penetration is about 18 inches, perfect for personal defense, but recoil is light. That's also a fairly accurate load with a 3-inch, 15-yard group. If the referee owner expects a long shot, the .45 Colt offers proven wounding potential without much recoil.
The Judge is a specialized pistol. This is by no means a go-anywhere-do-ever pistol. But what he does, he does well. It is worth your time to explore the Judge. Why the extra length? Because it can fire in addition to the famous and durable .45 Colt, this revolver can also shoot and fire .410 cartridges - giving the five-shot revolver plenty of firepower.
