Colorado Springs Aircraft Museum - The National Museum of World War II Aviation is a must-see for airplane and history buffs. Housed in a 109,000-square-foot building on a 20-acre campus near the Colorado Springs Airport, it has galleries for exhibits, workshops and a world-class, state-of-the-art facility for restoring World War II aircraft.

Established in 2012, it is the only museum in the world that focuses specifically on aircraft and the role of aviation in World War II. The Kaija Raven Shook Aeronautical Pavilion is one of the museum's newest features, with 40,000 square feet of exhibits covering more than a dozen World War II aircraft. The space is designed for functions and special events and can accommodate up to 800 guests.

After the nation entered the field, advanced replacements for rugged Grumman and other prewar designs were made from American factories. The industrial cornucopia includes aircraft such as the museum's B-25 Mitchell bomber.

Twin-engine Mitchells were flown from aircraft carriers in the 1942 Doolittle Raid, America's first strike on mainland Japan since Pearl Harbor.

Much of the museum's focus is on the ingenuity of the American engineers who built the planes. A disassembled P-47 Thunderbolt fighter is on display, revealing the plane's yard-long undercarriage.

Museum spokesman John Henry said the planes come from several groups who want to teach a new generation about the war.
